Schedule FA from E*TRADE and Morgan Stanley at Work
Many US companies run their stock plans through E*TRADE, now part of Morgan Stanley at Work. Here is what to download and how it maps to Schedule FA.
What to download
Log in to your stock plan account and look under the portfolio and tax sections for these:
- Benefit history (often downloaded as a spreadsheet): every RSU vest and ESPP purchase, with dates, share counts and the market value at vest or purchase.
- Gains and losses (the expanded download): every sale, including sell-to-cover sales at vesting, with dates and proceeds.
- Account statements for the year: dividends and the US tax withheld on them.
- Form 1042-S: confirms dividends and withholding, and names the financial institution you should use in Table A2.
Menu names change from time to time; if you cannot find a report, the account's help pages list where tax documents live.
How it maps to Schedule FA
- Table A3: one row per vest or purchase lot held at any time in the calendar year. Use the market value at vest (not zero) as the cost for RSUs, and the market value at purchase (not the discounted price) for ESPP.
- Table A2: the brokerage account itself. Use the institution and address shown on your Form 1042-S.
- Sales: appear as sale proceeds in A3 and in Schedule CG, at the Rule 115 rate.
- Dividends: income from other sources, Schedule FSI, and Form 67 for the tax withheld.
Using FA Ready with E*TRADE
FA Ready reads Fidelity exports directly. For E*TRADE, copy the rows into FA Ready's CSV template: one VEST row per lot (date, shares, market value), one SELL row per sale, and DIVIDEND and TAX rows from your statements. FA Ready then works out peak values, closing balances, capital gains and Form 67 figures at the right SBI rates. A direct E*TRADE import is planned; use the feedback button on the calculator to say you want it.
